Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka yesterday faulted the
visit of All Progressives Congress, APC, leaders to former
President Olusegun Obasanjo last Saturday warning that Nigeria
was heading for a shipwreck with such political romance.
In his statement, titled: “Shipwreck Ahead”, Professor Soyinka
cautioned that Nigeria would need rescue operations if the APC
intends to court Obasanjo to serve as a navigator for the ship of
the state.
According to Soyinka’s short statement, “an APC-led group, we
understand, has been paying courtesy visits to former Heads of
States. Would it be correct to state that their purpose is captured
in the following Mission Statement? ‘Tinubu added that the APC
had resolved to rescue Nigeria, appealing to Obasanjo to lead the
mission. We’re resolved and determined to rescue Nigeria. We
want you as navigator,’ he said.”
Soyinka, then added: “If this attribution is correct, may I urge you,
as an urgent public service, to advise families to beg...

"It is better to help a friend pay his fine, than
tell a lie to help him cover a crime." - Nigerian
proverb.
It was literally a life-long ambition, and I used every
opportunity to meet the old man in person. I was
finally in a position to press buttons and call old
friends to render favours, and in early 2007 I
succeeded. I was told I could see Mandela for only
30 minutes at his home, but I needed to get there
one hour earlier. Colleagues I had leaned on were
skeptical that I would see him despite the
appointment, particularly since I will not say it was
official.
An old South African friend and coursemate from
South Africa who helped suggested I asked
questions or matters I wanted to discuss with him
and send them in advance. I did not think that was
the type of meeting I wanted, so I did not.
Mandela was surprised when he was told I worked
at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but had
spent 6 months trying to see him to pa...

Jonathan encourages corruption in Nigeria, Speaker Tambuwal says The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has stated that President Goodluck Jonathan is encouraging corruption in Nigeria by his handling of corruption cases. “The President’s body language’ seems to be encouraging corrupt practices in the country,” the speaker said. He spoke while responding to questions on Monday after he presented a paper titled the ‘role of the legislature in the fight against corruption in Nigeria’ at a one day roundtable to mark the international anti-corruption day organised by the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, in Abuja. “Take the subsidy probe, the pension, the SEC probe and recently the bullet proof car cases. After the House of Representatives did a diligent job by probing and exposing the cases, you now see something else when it comes to pros...

on november 06, 2013 at 8:07 am in news
BY Soni Daniel, Regional Editor, North
BAUCHI—As Nigerians prepare the groundwork for a
National Conference, Bauchi State governor, Mallam
Isa Yuguda, yesterday, cautioned against allowing
those who do not wish Nigeria well to participate in
the confab.
The governor, who spoke exclusively to Vanguard,
warned that those who were gearing up for Nigeria’s
disintegration and disharmony among the different
ethnic nationalities should not be allowed to have
their way during the discussion.
*Gov. Isa Yuguda
Yuguda said that although President Goodluck
Jonathan meant well by convoking the dialogue,
well-meaning Nigerians must be on the alert to
ward off tribal warlords and ethnic jingoists, who
would want to use the platform to campaign for the
advancement of narrow interests at the expense of
national integration.
The governor said: “During the conference, anybody

World Cup: Only proper preparation will make Eagles excel — Keshi on december 07, 2013 at 8:54 pm in sports *Confesses ignorance of Iran, Bosnia-Herzegovina Moments after Nigeria’s Super Eagles were Friday in Salvador, Brazil, drawn in Group F of the 2014 World Cup scheduled for Brazil next summer, Chief Coach Stephen Keshi played down suggestions from football analysts, both Nigerians and foreigners alike, that they have an ‘easy draw’, insisting that only adequate preparation will see the team go far in the competition. “I am not in the group that feels the Draw was an easy one. That would be a mistake to make because all the 32 teams in the pot were worth their places and would be formidable to tackle in the finals. “There is no way we are going to look at any team and under-rate that team. They qualified just like we did, and no team would be coming determined to simply make up the number.” The former Nigeria captain says it is always a thing of pride to be counted among the elite....

Pick neutral candidate for PDP – Group on september 18, 2013 at 2:04 pm in politics By VINCENT UJUMADU A group, the PDP Forward Forum, has asked the national leadership of the party to pick a neutral person from those that participated in the party’s primaries as the candidate of the party for the November 16 if PDP hopes to take part in the election. In a statement in Awka yesterday, the group’s chairman, Mr. Bertram Okonkwo described as unfortunate a situation whereby members of the party in Anambra State have not known their governorship candidate two months to the election. He said: “It is now left for the PDP to go back to the drawing board and re-strategize on the way forward. One of the options left to the party is to revisit the list of its primary aspirants and pick a candidate who appears to be neutral and unaffected in the power- play. “Political analysts are of the opinion that one of the aspirants who contested but were not successful, such as Dr. Ale...

PDP crisis alters political calculations (2) on september 18, 2013 at 3:19 pm in politics Chris Uba By VINCENT UJUMADU Observers believe that for Uba to win the election, he must work with the Emeakayi group who controls the grassroots of the party as could be seen in his recent outing before the controversial governorship primaries of the party. For instance, the group has all the ward and local government officials, as well as all the candidates for the postponed local government election. What happened in 2010 when the party forced the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Professor Charles Soludo on the state as the PDP candidate is still fresh in people’s minds and a repeat of such would be a mistake too many for PDP. Already, most of the people who were with Chief Chris Uba in his hey days as the political godfather in the state have abandoned him for other political parties. One of them, Dr. Emeka Eze, is presently the running mate o...

Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur and Pawan Gupta were found guilty on all counts earlier this week. Judge Yogesh Khanna said the case fell in the "rarest of rare category", rejecting pleas for a lighter sentence. The woman, 23, was attacked on a bus in December and died two weeks later. 'Justice delivered' On Friday, Judge Khanna said the attack "shocked the collective conscience" of India, and that "courts cannot turn a blind eye" to such crimes. september 13, 2013 Following threats by the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, to shut down private universities over the protracted strike embarked upon by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Vice Chancellors of private universities, yesterday, charged the students’ body to mediate between government and ASUU to return normalcy to the country’s universities. Speaking separately in a telephone chat with Vanguard, the Vice Chancellors argued that there was no need for the threat, since private universities were not owned by government and that their owners didn’t enter into any agreement with the striking university lecturers. They noted that they also have their wards and relations in public universities, who are affected by the shutdown. According to Professor Isaac Adeyemi, Vice Chancellor, Bells University of Technology, BELLSTECH, Ota, Ogun State, NANS is made up of matured minds and must, therefore, broker peace between government and the agg...
