Pick neutral candidate for PDP – Group on september 18, 2013 at 2:04 pm in politics By VINCENT UJUMADU A group, the PDP Forward Forum, has asked the national leadership of the party to pick a neutral person from those that participated in the party’s primaries as the candidate of the party for the November 16 if PDP hopes to take part in the election. In a statement in Awka yesterday, the group’s chairman, Mr. Bertram Okonkwo described as unfortunate a situation whereby members of the party in Anambra State have not known their governorship candidate two months to the election. He said: “It is now left for the PDP to go back to the drawing board and re-strategize on the way forward. One of the options left to the party is to revisit the list of its primary aspirants and pick a candidate who appears to be neutral and unaffected in the power- play. “Political analysts are of the opinion that one of the aspirants who contested but were not successful, such as Dr. Ale...

PDP crisis alters political calculations (2) on september 18, 2013 at 3:19 pm in politics Chris Uba By VINCENT UJUMADU Observers believe that for Uba to win the election, he must work with the Emeakayi group who controls the grassroots of the party as could be seen in his recent outing before the controversial governorship primaries of the party. For instance, the group has all the ward and local government officials, as well as all the candidates for the postponed local government election. What happened in 2010 when the party forced the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Professor Charles Soludo on the state as the PDP candidate is still fresh in people’s minds and a repeat of such would be a mistake too many for PDP. Already, most of the people who were with Chief Chris Uba in his hey days as the political godfather in the state have abandoned him for other political parties. One of them, Dr. Emeka Eze, is presently the running mate o...

september 13, 2013 Following threats by the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, to shut down private universities over the protracted strike embarked upon by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Vice Chancellors of private universities, yesterday, charged the students’ body to mediate between government and ASUU to return normalcy to the country’s universities. Speaking separately in a telephone chat with Vanguard, the Vice Chancellors argued that there was no need for the threat, since private universities were not owned by government and that their owners didn’t enter into any agreement with the striking university lecturers. They noted that they also have their wards and relations in public universities, who are affected by the shutdown. According to Professor Isaac Adeyemi, Vice Chancellor, Bells University of Technology, BELLSTECH, Ota, Ogun State, NANS is made up of matured minds and must, therefore, broker peace between government and the agg...
