EU hopeful of gas deal between Ukraine and Russia

The EU’s energy commissioner is hopeful of a deal between Ukraine and Russia to end their dispute over gas deliveries after three-way talks in Berlin. Guenther Oettinger outlined a plan which would see Russia supply Ukraine over the winter and into the spring. Ukraine would pay Russia $2bn (£1.2bn) of its gas debt by the end of October and another $1.1bn by the year’s end. The talks will continue next week. Russia halted supplies in June over Ukraine’s unpaid debts. Relations had soured after the overthrow of Ukraine’s pro-Russian President, Viktor Yanukovych, in February and Russia’s subsequent support for separatists in Crimea and other Ukrainian regions. Friday’s talks came after Hungary cut its gas deliveries to Ukraine, arguing that it needed to stock up its reserves. Hungary was criticised by the European Commission but argued that it could not risk being cut off by Russia before winter set in.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria on Friday denied that its President, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, had accused the President of Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Ortistejafor, of denting the image of Christianity in Nigeria over the controversial $9.3 million allegedly found in the aircraft owned by the CAN President. “There is a poison of deliberate misinformation in the air, more deadly than the Ebola Virus Disease. In God’s name it shall not come to be,” the CBCN said in a statement by its Director (Social Communications)in the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Chris Anyanwu. According to the organization, the reports carried in some Newspapers were “not only false and malicious but a calculated attempt to further sow the seed of disharmony between Catholics and the leadersh...

Probe Alleged Corruption In The Military

FOLLOWING the sudden upsurge of the activities of the Boko Haram insurgents in the Nigerian North east, with the mighty Nigerian Armed Forces appearing to wilt in the face of the affront to our territorial integrity, many Nigerians wondered why the surge of support from the advanced countries and friends of Nigeria did not produce any positive result. It has since emerged that the United States has increasingly become aloof towards Nigeria as a result of what it sees as frequent abuse of human rights in the war on terror, as well as the high scale of corruption in the top echelons of the military. In fact, the dynamic American Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr James F Entwistle, has several times called for accountability among the service chiefs. There have been grumbles in the army that we lack the equipment to fight though spending on defence has remained high in the past three years. This has led to acts of indiscipline in the rank and file, which precipitated the recent court martials. ...
